What is Feldenkrais For Musicians ?

This workshop offers a rare bridge between the high-performance world of professional artistry and the subtle neuro-motor education of the Feldenkrais Method. Taught by Alan Fraser, the sessions apply somatic principles to the concrete, physical mechanics of instrumental performance. Most methods focus on "relaxation," but Fraser’s approach seeks something more potent: vitality and structural integrity. Rather than just releasing tension, we focus on how the skeleton can efficiently support the demands of your instrument. By understanding the body’s natural mechanical advantages, musicians move beyond physical limitations into a state of effortless power. The result is a transformative shift in technique: For Musicians: You will discover how your physical organization - from your primary image to the point of contact with your instrument - directly dictates your tone, phrasing, and technical ease, but also pain and effort. Crucially, you will learn how inefficient organization creates the pain and excessive effort that often lead to injury, and how to replace those habits with functional, pain-free movement. For Practitioners: You gain a live "laboratory" to apply FI and ATM to complex, high-level artistic tasks, learning how to help performers find stability and freedom simultaneously. Through Awareness Through Movement tailored for musicians, we move beyond "trying harder" and instead learn to "move better," unlocking a level of expression that feels natural and sustainable.

Facilitators

Alan Fraser is a pianist, teacher, and author originally from Montreal. Inspired by Vladimir Horowitz’s unique touch and fascinated by the connection between movement and sound, he began practicing Tai Chi in 1979 to explore how physical organization influences musical expression. Further studies with Phil Cohen, Tom Plaunt, and later Kemal Gekić in Yugoslavia deepened his insights into piano technique. Concurrently, Fraser trained in the Feldenkrais Method to refine his approach, aiming to unite weight technique, expressive gesture, and structural awareness of the body. Now based in Belgrade, Serbia, he continues to perform, present at international conferences, and publish books
